Track bolts, also called fang bolts or rail anchor bolts, are used to fix steel rails and rail chairs to rail tie plates, or to fasten rail joints to link rails. In most cases, when building a new railway system, the track anchors are made of concrete instead of traditional wood. In order to fix the track to the concrete anchor, the track must be fixed into the concrete by using mounting brackets that hold the rails of the track in place. Before installing the rail on the mounting bracket, the mounting bracket must be anchored to the concrete. This is done by using dedicated track bolts.

Because of the weight that the track of any track system must bear at any given time, the anchoring system must be as strong as possible to prevent any possibility of displacement. As a result, most of the mounting brackets and track bolts are made of hardened steel. The steel has been treated to prevent it from rusting. These mounting systems using track bolts are installed and directly anchored to the track anchors, regardless of whether the track is made of concrete, wood or other materials.

The track bolts themselves include not only threaded bolts. Track bolts are usually three-part fasteners, including bolts, lugs or nuts, and lock washers. The washer prevents the track bolts from shifting or loosening due to strong vibration caused by passing trains.

Place the nut on the mounting bracket, on the faucet into which the bolt is screwed, while placing the washer on top of the lug. The mounting bracket and the lug have opposite teeth, which when engaged with each other, can prevent any slippage during the tightening process. After applying the lock washer to the top of the lug, align the bolt with the center of the lug, and then drive it into the anchor of the track through the screw hole in the mounting bracket. Once the lock washer is engaged with the bolt, it can prevent the bolt from slipping or twisting.

As the track bolts are fastened and fixed into the track anchor by the mounting bracket, the fixing pin or track pin held by the mounting bracket is pulled down. Then, it applies pressure to the bottom flange of the rail. This is the most common method of fixing the track to the fixed anchor of the track system.

Application factors of track bolts:
According to the standards of steel rails, each rail joint needs to be bolted with at least two bolts in each rail tightened to approximately 400 foot-pounds of torque which develops between 25,000, and 30, 000 pounds of tension in track bolts.
Track bolts in use have to be in the proper size and tightly in place.
Track bolts have to be installed with AREMA spring washers whereas the nuts have to be installed against the spring washer.
Track bolts have to be installed and the nuts have to install alternately on the inside and outside of the rail track.
When track bolts and joint bars are moved away, the joint area of the rail and the contact surface of the joint bar have to be cleaned and the joint bar and the bolt threads have to be lubricated.
Safety standards require that on operation are permitted over rail tracks where all bolts are missing or ineffective
