Steel rail is the main component of railway track. Its function is to guide the wheels of locomotive vehicles forward, withstand the huge pressure of the wheels, and transmit to the sleepers. The rails must provide the wheels with a continuous, smooth, and minimally rolling surface. In electrified railways or automatic blocking sections, the rails can also serve as track circuits.

 

Rail classification

\China's steel rails can be divided into crane rails (crane rails), heavy rails, and light rails in kilograms of approximate weight per meter:

The crane rail is divided into four types: QU120, QU100, QU80, and QU70. The material is generally manganese steel, and the largest weight is QU120 up to 118kg / m.

Heavy rail. According to the type of steel used, it is divided into: ordinary manganese-containing rails, copper-containing ordinary carbon steel rails, high-silicon copper-containing steel rails, copper rails, manganese rails, and silicon rails. There are three types: 38, 43, and 50kg. In addition, there are 45kg rails for a few lines, and 60kg rails have been planned for lines with large traffic and high speeds. GB258581 stipulates the technical conditions of 38 50kg / m steel rail in China, and its dimensions and codes are shown in Table 6-7-10.

In 2007, China promulgated a new standard GB 2585-2007. In addition to 38-50 kg / m, 60 kg / m heavy rails and 75 kg / m heavy rails were newly added.

 

Each country in the world has its own standards for the production of rails, and the classification methods are also different.

German standard: DIN series crane rail.

Light Rail. The variety is specified in the standard (5) of "8". There are different rail types such as 9, 12, 15, 22, and 30kg / m. The cross-sectional dimensions and rail types are shown in Figure 6-7-11. For technical requirements, please refer to the standard (3) in "8".

Light rail is also divided into two types: national standard (GB) and ministry standard (YB metallurgical department standard). There are several types of GB mentioned above. YB models are: 8, 18, 24kg / m.

The rails are rolled from carbon-killed steel smelted by open hearth and oxygen converter. Its purpose is to withstand the operating pressure and impact load of rolling stock.
