Insulated rail joints are a type of rail joints that are usually used to determine the position of trains for the purpose of safety signal control. It is an important component of control signals and rail break identification systems in railway track circuits. At present, our insulated rail joint design mainly includes the following parts:
1. Two rail sections cut normal to the axes of the rails,
2. One end post,
3. Two joint bars (also known as fish plates),
4. Six (or four) bolts, nuts & washers,
5. Electrical insulation material sheets.
Insulated rail joints are further classified into bonded or non-bonded insulated rail joints. Bonded insulated rail joints are glued insulated rail joints. Non-bonded insulated rail joints are basically bolted joints that have some type of electrically insulating properties.
1. Insulated of insulated rail joints
Bonded insulated rail joints consist of bonded insulation wrapped around each contact surface to electrically isolate them. Bonded insulated rail joints are manufactured in the factory through a heat treatment process to wrap the insulation around the surfaces of all metal components to ensure electrical isolation of each component.
2. Non-bonded insulated rail joints
Non-bonded insulated rail joints are made of polyurethane and are bonded to microalloy joint strips. The polyurethane we use to make non-bonded insulated rail joints is a specially formulated compound that is highly resistant to deterioration caused by UV rays, ozone, weathering, abrasion or the impact and bending stresses of heavy rail traffic. The dense polyurethane material is firmly bonded to the entire rail joint and provides superior insulation between the joint and rail.
